For Episode 6 of BLACK MIRROR REFLECTIONS, I am joined by filmmaker John Cerrito to talk about Season 1, Episode 2 of Black Mirror entitled “The Entire History of You,” which originally premiered in 2011.

Before we get to the episode notes, though, I have some exciting Black Mirror news to share! Charlie Brooker has apparently begun work on a mockumentary about 2020, and he tweeted a (very short) teaser for it yesterday here. The teaser doesn’t reveal much, but we know from other sources that Hugh Grant will have a role as a be-wigged historian of the 21st century.

Also, speaking of Twitter, please take a minute to follow this podcast @BMR_podcast, if you haven’t done so already!

My guest for Episode 6 is Los Angeles-based director, screenwriter, and editor, John Cerrito. John received his MFA in Film Directing from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television in 2018. His filmmaking often sits at the intersection of speculative fiction and social advocacy, with particular focus on gender, identity, patriarchy and mental health. His films have screened at Cinequest, Indie Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, Dances with Films, and Napa Valley Film Festivals.

His debut feature as writer-director, THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT, was released this year through Gravitas Ventures, and is currently streaming free on Amazon Prime here. John describes the film as “a romantic comedy with a secret agenda” and, as someone who has seen it, I will say that it is much, much more than that! The film is smart, innovative, and forward-thinking in a lot of ways– about technology, about gender, about relationships in the digital age– but it also manages to be really warm and touching without being corny like so many rom-coms. Definitely check it out!
One of the things I loved about our “The Entire History of You” conversation was John’s ability to offer his insights, both as a filmmaker and a millennial. You can listen to the whole thing here:

At BLACK MIRROR REFLECTIONS, we assume that everyone is already committed to read more, write more, think more, and be more… so here’s a helpful list of links to thinkers, technologies, books, and articles referenced in this episode:
